How to Calculate How Much Mulch You Need
Calculate mulch quantity for garden beds and landscaping. Coverage charts, depth recommendations, and buying tips.
Mulch is one of the most cost-effective landscaping investments — it suppresses weeds, retains moisture, moderates soil temperature, and looks great. But ordering the right amount requires a quick calculation. Too little and you’re making a second delivery trip; too much and you’re moving wheelbarrows of mulch to the back corner of your yard.
Quick Answer: Cubic yards = (Area in sq ft × Depth in inches) ÷ 324. Standard depth is 3 inches for beds, 3–4 inches for weed suppression. Under 3 cubic yards → buy bags. Over 3 cubic yards → bulk delivery is cheaper.
The Calculation
Volume (cubic yards) = (Area in sq ft × Depth in inches) ÷ 324
The 324 constant converts square feet and inches directly to cubic yards without intermediate unit conversions.
Example: 400 sq ft of beds, 3 inches deep:
- (400 × 3) ÷ 324 = 3.7 cubic yards → order 4 yards

How Deep Should Mulch Be?
| Purpose | Recommended Depth |
|---|---|
| Basic coverage | 2 inches |
| Standard beds | 3 inches |
| Weed suppression | 3–4 inches |
| Tree rings | 3–4 inches (keep away from trunk) |
| Pathways | 4–6 inches |
Never apply mulch more than 4 inches deep around plants — it can cause root suffocation and crown rot.
Mulch Coverage Chart
| Cubic Yards | 2” Deep | 3” Deep | 4” Deep |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 yd³ | 162 sq ft | 108 sq ft | 81 sq ft |
| 2 yd³ | 324 sq ft | 216 sq ft | 162 sq ft |
| 3 yd³ | 486 sq ft | 324 sq ft | 243 sq ft |
| 5 yd³ | 810 sq ft | 540 sq ft | 405 sq ft |
Mulch Types
| Type | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shredded bark | Beds, trees | Most common, long-lasting |
| Wood chips | Pathways, larger areas | Cheaper, breaks down faster |
| Hardwood | Formal beds | Denser, slower decomposition |
| Cedar/cypress | Insect resistance | Premium price |
| Pine needles | Acid-loving plants | Free from your trees |
| Rubber mulch | Playgrounds | Does not decompose |
Buying Mulch: Bags vs. Bulk
Bags (2 cubic feet per bag):
- About 14 bags per cubic yard
- Easy to handle, no delivery needed
- Cost: $4–$8 per bag → $55–$110 per cubic yard
- Best for: under 3 cubic yards
Bulk delivery:
- Most suppliers deliver 3-yard minimums
- Cost: $25–$45 per cubic yard + delivery fee
- Best for: 3+ cubic yards
The break-even point is usually around 3–4 cubic yards where bulk delivery becomes cheaper despite the delivery fee.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I refresh mulch? Organic mulch decomposes. Refresh every 1–2 years by adding 1–2 inches on top of the existing layer. Don’t remove old mulch unless it’s compacted or diseased — old decomposed mulch improves soil.
Should I remove old mulch before adding new? Usually not necessary. If total depth exceeds 4 inches, remove some old mulch before adding fresh. If old mulch is matted or showing signs of disease, removal is a good idea.
Is it cheaper to use gravel instead of mulch? Gravel costs more upfront but doesn’t need replacement. Over 10 years, gravel is often cheaper. Mulch feeds the soil and looks more natural. It’s a personal and functional preference. See our Gravel Calculator to compare quantities.
