Frequently Asked Questions
A standard 4×4 post in a 10-inch diameter, 2.5-foot deep hole needs about 2 bags of 80 lb concrete mix. The Fence Post Calculator totals this across your entire fence run.
Wood privacy fences: 6–8 feet on center. Chain link: 10 feet. Rail fences: 8–10 feet. Closer spacing improves rigidity in high-wind areas.
Posts should be buried 1/3 of their total length, minimum 2 feet in frost-free areas. In frost zones, extend to the local frost depth (often 36–42 inches in the northern US).
For wood fence posts, concrete anchors are strongly recommended. Metal T-posts (farm/ranch fencing) are driven directly with no concrete needed. Vinyl fencing always requires concrete per manufacturer specs.
Wait 24–48 hours with standard concrete mix. Fast-setting concrete (Quikrete Fast-Setting) allows panel attachment after 4 hours.
Whether you're installing a privacy fence, split rail, or chain link, the math always starts the same way: how many posts, how far apart, and how much concrete? Get those numbers right before you call the lumber yard.

| Fence Type | Typical Post Spacing |
|---|---|
| Wood privacy (6 ft) | 6–8 ft on center |
| Wood rail fence | 8–10 ft on center |
| Chain link | 10 ft on center |
| Split rail | 8–10 ft on center |
| Vinyl panel | 6–8 ft on center |
In high-wind zones, reduce to 6 ft spacing for privacy fences to improve rigidity.
- Posts should be buried 1/3 of their total length (minimum 2 ft in frost-free areas)
- 6-foot fence post: bury 2 feet — use 8-foot posts
- 8-foot fence post: bury 2.5–3 feet — use 10 or 12-foot posts
- A 10-inch diameter hole at 2.5 ft deep uses approx. 2 bags of 80 lb mix per post
- Panel fencing (pre-assembled 6×6 or 6×8 sections) installs faster but is less flexible on uneven terrain
- Board-on-board fencing is adjustable for slopes, allows airflow, and has a more finished look
- Material cost for board-on-board is slightly higher but offers better long-term value
- Gate posts must be set at least 6 inches deeper than standard posts
- Use a minimum 12-inch diameter hole for gate posts
- Double-post gate systems use 4 posts for double gates
- Never hang a gate from standard fence posts — they will fail under lateral load
