Frequently Asked Questions

Standard 8×8×16 CMU blocks cover approximately 0.889 sq ft per block. That is about 1.125 blocks per square foot of wall face.

Plan on 0.02–0.03 cubic feet of mortar per standard CMU block. For 100 blocks, that is roughly 3–4 bags of premix mortar.

Patios need 4–6 inches of compacted gravel base plus 1 inch of bedding sand. Driveways need 6–8 inches of base. Total depth depends on expected load.

Use 3/4" clean crushed stone (no fines) at least 12 inches wide behind the wall. Install perforated pipe at the base wrapped in filter fabric to relieve hydrostatic pressure.

Walls under 4 feet typically do not require engineered design. For walls 4–6 feet, check local codes. Over 6 feet always requires a structural engineer.

Masonry work requires careful material estimation. Too few blocks and you halt work waiting on delivery; too many and you're stuck with unmixed mortar and unused material. Our masonry calculators give you exact counts before the first block is laid.

Mortar Mix Types

TypeMix Ratio (cement:lime:sand)Typical Use
Type S1:0.5:4.5Load-bearing walls, below-grade work
Type N1:1:6Non-load-bearing, above-grade exterior
Type M1:0.25:3Foundations, retaining walls

One 80 lb bag of mortar mix covers approximately 25–35 standard CMU blocks, depending on joint consistency.

Good to know Retaining Wall Design Guidelines
  • Walls under 4 ft: typically no engineered design required
  • Walls 4–6 ft: consult local codes and manufacturer specs
  • Walls over 6 ft: always requires a structural engineer
  • Standard setback (batter): 1 inch per course for gravity walls
  • Always include drainage aggregate and perforated pipe behind retaining walls
