How to Calculate Topsoil: Coverage, Depth, and Ordering
How much topsoil do you need? Calculate cubic yards for lawns, garden beds, and raised beds with coverage charts and ordering tips.
Topsoil is the foundation of any healthy lawn or garden. Knowing how much to order prevents the expense of delivery shortages and the inconvenience of a mountain of leftover soil in your driveway.
What Is Topsoil?
Topsoil is the upper 4–12 inches of soil, rich in organic matter, microorganisms, and nutrients. It’s the growing zone for plants. Below topsoil is subsoil — denser, less fertile, and used for structural fill, not growing.
Warning: Never use topsoil as structural fill under driveways, patios, foundations, or any load-bearing surface. Topsoil contains organic matter that compresses and decomposes over time — causing settlement cracks and surface failure. Use compactable gravel or engineered fill for structural applications.
How to Calculate Topsoil Volume
Volume (cubic feet) = Area (sq ft) × Depth (ft) Volume (cubic yards) = Volume (cubic feet) ÷ 27

Topsoil Depth Guide
| Application | Recommended Depth |
|---|---|
| Lawn establishment | 4–6 inches |
| Lawn overseeding | 1–2 inches |
| Garden bed | 8–12 inches |
| Raised bed (new) | 12–18 inches |
| Top-dressing | 0.5–1 inch |
Coverage Chart (Cubic Yards per Area)
| Area | 4” Deep | 6” Deep | 12” Deep |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 sq ft | 6.2 yd³ | 9.3 yd³ | 18.5 yd³ |
| 1,000 sq ft | 12.3 yd³ | 18.5 yd³ | 37 yd³ |
| 2,000 sq ft | 24.7 yd³ | 37 yd³ | 74 yd³ |
Delivery Options
- By the bag (40 lb, ~0.75 cu ft): Only for very small areas. Expensive per yard.
- Pickup truck load: 0.5–1 cubic yard. Good for small projects.
- Bulk delivery: Most suppliers deliver in 5–15 yard loads. Minimum delivery varies.
Topsoil Quality
Not all topsoil is equal. Ask suppliers:
- Is it screened (no rocks or debris)?
- What’s the organic matter content?
- Has it been tested for weed seeds?
“Screened topsoil” is worth the premium for most applications.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many cubic yards in a pickup truck load? A full-size pickup carries roughly 0.5 cubic yards (half a ton) comfortably. Don’t exceed your truck’s payload rating — topsoil weighs about 1 ton per cubic yard.
Can I mix topsoil with my existing soil? Yes — in fact, tilling new topsoil into your existing soil (to 6–8 inches) produces better results than simply layering it on top, which can cause drainage stratification.
How much does topsoil cost? Bulk delivered topsoil runs $25–$75 per cubic yard depending on quality and your region. Screened, blended topsoil commands the higher end. Delivery charges add $50–$150 for most areas.
