Overview

Roofing material quantities depend on actual roof surface area, not plan (footprint) area. The slope factor converts horizontal projection to true sloped area. All roofing material is ordered in squares (1 square = 100 ft²). Waste factors account for edge cuts, ridge caps, valleys, and starter courses.

Metal roofing (standing seam, corrugated) uses panel coverage width rather than squares, since panels run full slope length with minimal overlap waste.

Core Formulas

Slope Factor

Slope Factor = √(1 + (Pitch/12)²)

For a 6/12 pitch: √(1 + 0.25) = √1.25 ≈ 1.118. A 6/12 roof has 11.8% more surface area than its footprint.

Roof Surface Area

Roof Area = Plan Area × Slope Factor

Plan area = Length × Width of the building footprint covered by the roof section.

Squares Required

Squares = ⌈(Roof Area / 100) × (1 + Waste)⌉

Pitch Angle

Angle (°) = arctan(Pitch / 12) × (180 / π)

A 4/12 pitch = arctan(0.333) ≈ 18.4°. Walking safety is typically considered acceptable at or below 6/12 (26.6°).

Metal Roofing Panel Count

Panels = ⌈(Rafter length / Panel length)⌉ × ⌈(Width / Coverage width)⌉

Coverage width accounts for the panel overlap (typically 1–2 inches per panel seam).

Waste Factors

Roof TypeDefault WasteRationale
Simple gable10%Minimal cuts, one ridge line
Hip roof15%Four diagonal hip cuts per section

Metal panels (standing seam)5–8%Panels run full slope with minimal offcuts
Low-slope modified bitumen10%Roll goods, seams, perimeter detailing

NRCA (National Roofing Contractors Association) guidelines recommend a minimum 10% waste for residential shingle work; 15% is industry standard for hip or complex roofs.

Assumptions

  • Starter course is included in the 10% waste factor; a separate starter-course calculator is not provided.
  • Ridge cap shingles use 3 tabs per lineal foot of ridge from a standard bundle — not separately calculated.
  • Ice-and-water shield coverage (2 ft from eave minimum per IRC) is not modeled; allow 1 square per 30 lineal ft of eave.
  • Our calculators model simple rectangular roof sections. L-shaped, multi-section, or complex dormered roofs should be divided into rectangles and summed.
  • Drip edge and flashing linear footage is not calculated — allow 1 lineal foot of drip edge per lineal foot of rake and eave.
