Overview

Concrete volume calculations on ConstructCalc follow the same geometry used in industry — plain rectangular/circular volume formulas from field geometry, then converted to the order unit (cubic yards or cubic meters). Every result includes a conservative waste allowance consistent with ACI and PCA field practice.

Our formulas are intentionally simple and verifiable. Complex engineered pours (post-tensioned slabs, high-strength mixes, structural elements per ACI 318 Chapter 26) require a licensed structural engineer; our calculators cover standard residential and light commercial work.

Core Formulas

Rectangular Slab / Footing

V = L × W × T

Where L = length (ft), W = width (ft), T = thickness (ft, converted from inches by ÷ 12). Result in ft³, then ÷ 27 for yd³.

Round Column / Post Hole

V = π × r² × H

Where r = radius (ft), H = height/depth (ft). Standard value π = 3.14159.

Trapezoidal Footing (Stepped)

V = ((A₁ + A₂) / 2) × H

Used for sloped or stepped footings where the top and bottom cross-sections differ.

Concrete Bags to Volume

Bags = V_ft³ / Yield_per_bag

Unit Conversions

  • 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet
  • 1 cubic foot = 0.0283168 m³
  • 1 cubic meter = 35.3147 cubic feet = 1.30795 cubic yards
  • Thickness entered in inches → divided by 12 to convert to feet before multiplying

Bag Yield Assumptions

Mixed yield per bag after accounting for water addition and shrinkage. Values match manufacturer data sheets from Quikrete and Sakrete:

Bag SizeYield (ft³)Source
80 lb0.60Quikrete #1101 / Sakrete 80 lb
60 lb0.45Quikrete #1101 / Sakrete 60 lb
50 lb0.375Standard high-strength mix
40 lb0.30Quikrete #1101 40 lb

Yields are for standard 3000 psi mix. High-strength (5000 psi) mixes yield slightly less per bag due to lower water content. Always verify with your supplier's current product data sheet.

Waste Factors

We apply a default 10% waste allowance to all concrete orders, shown in the "Recommended Order" callout. Concrete is ordered in whole cubic yard increments from most ready-mix plants, so the actual order is rounded up to the nearest 0.25 yd³.

ApplicationDefault WasteRationale
Residential slabs5–10%Formwork variation, uneven subgrade
Footings10%Soil irregularity, form settling
Columns5%Tight cylindrical forms, less spillage
Driveways10%Edge forms, contraction joints

PCA (Portland Cement Association) field guides recommend ordering at minimum 5% extra for residential work; ACI 302.1R-15 (Guide for Concrete Floor and Slab Construction) recommends 10% for slabs with irregular subgrades.

Material Density Assumptions

  • Wet concrete: ~145 lb/ft³ (2,320 kg/m³) — standard normal-weight mix
  • Cured concrete: ~150 lb/ft³ (2,400 kg/m³) — used for weight load estimates
  • Ready-mix density varies with aggregate type; lightweight mix ≈ 110 lb/ft³

Assumptions & Limitations

  • All calculations assume uniform thickness. Variable-thickness pours (thickened edges, haunches) should be split into multiple sections.
  • No reinforcement volume deduction is applied. Rebar typically displaces <2% of concrete volume — negligible for ordering purposes.
  • Ready-mix concrete is ordered in yd³; bag concrete is ordered by count. Mixed pour strategies are not modeled.
  • Prices shown are national market-rate estimates. Actual pricing varies by region, mix design, and supplier.
